Advent Joy

Advent Week FOUR: JOY

Joy to the World!

This popular Christmas carol, written in 1719 by Isaac Watts, has endured the test of time.  It is the most published and performed Christmas carol in North America.  This dearly loved carol is based on Psalm 98:4, with references to 96:11-12, and Genesis 3:17-18.

Watts, a Methodist minister, published a book of poems based on the Psalms.  He wrote these poems as a way to reveal Jesus through the Psalms. Watts believed that Psalm 98 was a celebration of Jesus’ role as both King of His church and King of His world.

“Joy to the world, the Lord is come; Let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare him room. And heaven and nature sing!
And heaven and nature sing! And heaven …… and heaven …… and nature sing.”

Each Christmas season brings us the anticipation of Jesus’ arrival on this earth. Just as Watts saw what Jesus’ life and ministry meant through the Psalms, we too can see what Jesus means to our lives and to this world – Eternal Life.

There is great Joy in knowing that Jesus brings eternal life to everyone in the world. All we need to do is believe He died for our sins, came back to life and lives today in our hearts and with God His father.

The greatest Joy one can have is to know that Jesus is living in us, in our world every day, and that we will live with Jesus forever.
“Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; Let us shout aloud to the Rock of our Salvation. Let us come before Him with thanksgiving and extol Him with music and song.” –Psalm 95:1-2

“Let the heavens rejoice, the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.” –Psalm 96:11-12

“Light shines on the righteous and joy on the upright in heart. Rejoice in the Lord, you who are righteous and praise His holy name.”
–Psalm 98: 11-12

“Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the Nations, ‘The Lord has done great things for them.’” –Psalm 126:2

“For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you?” –1 Thessalonians 2:19

“For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his dwelling place.” –1 Chronicles 16:26-27
